Shared finances, without the awkward spreadsheets.

Keep the household books, split trip costs with friends, and settle to the cent. Every expense in the currency it was paid in, every balance adding up to zero.

  • Balances that always add up to zero.
  • Multi-currency trips, converted at a rate you record.
  • Receipts attached to the expense they prove.

One place for the household books, and for the trips you share.

Households

Two people keep one set of books. Accounts, income, expenses and transfers, categories, monthly budgets, and the receipt behind each entry. Nothing is edited after the fact: a mistake is voided and corrected, and the trail stays.

Trips

Invite the people you travel with. Everyone records what they paid, in the currency they paid it. The trip keeps one balance per person, always adding up to zero, and proposes the payments that settle it.

The household accounting dashboard: balances by currency, the month, budgets, receipts and recent activity. A trip dashboard: who owes whom, the group and personal budgets, participant balances and the suggested settlements.

How a trip settles.

  1. Record. Add the expense in the currency on the receipt. Split it equally, by exact amounts, by percentages, by shares, or item by item from the receipt.
  2. Decide who bears it. Who benefited and who bears the cost are two different questions, and the app asks both. A guest you are treating stays on the expense and owes nothing.
  3. Settle with one list. The trip proposes the smallest set of payments that clears every balance. Record each one as it happens.

Why it is called Closestify.

Three people share a bill of 100.00 and nobody can pay 33.333. Closestify cuts the bill into whole cents, so each share is within one cent of its exact value and the three shares add up to exactly 100.00. The trip decides who carries the odd cent: the same person every time, each day in turn, a sealed draw, the host, the biggest share, or the smallest. Every expense remembers which rule split it, so changing the rule later never changes what was already recorded.

The Closestify section of Edit Trip: who carries the odd cent, with the current rule and the rule for expenses recorded from now on.

The question a guest actually asks.

A guest does not open a finance app to study charts. They open it on a phone to ask one thing: what do I owe? The trip dashboard answers it first. "You owe Alex THB 1,850.00. One payment settles you up." Then the balances, then the proposed payments, then everything else.
